Recharge Pavilion

The Recharge Pavilion is a project designed by youth for youth with the help of the Impact Montevallo Coalition.  A place to recharge your mind, your friendships and your phone. It is located in Orr Park, the City’s largest park which is well-known for its artistic wood carvings and vibrant with activity.  The youth wanted a place that was easily accessible and provided elements of fun for youth to gather with friends.  The coalition worked with the City to determine a location that was highly visible to encourage positive choices and accessible to youth by walking.  The youth wanted a shaded area to gather that had swings, fun colors and place to charge their phones. It features 4 colorful porch swings, 3 solar charging stations, and 6 vibrant positive message signs in the inside rooftop.  The Recharge Pavilion is a successful addition to our community and well loved and utilized by our community.  A place to gather that visually encourages positive choices and reflection.

Mentoring Programs

A partnership with local middle and high schools have allowed the Impact Montevallo Coalition to host mentoring groups for at-risk students identified by school administrators. These groups have been successful in helping to build relationships with students to provide resources and information to encourage more positive choices.  Students have increased academic participation and outcomes, decreased at-risk behaviors and continue to seek mentorship following the program.

Gas Station Drugs Prevention

In partnership with the Montevallo Police Department, the Impact Montevallo Coalition has become a well-known resource for up-to-date information on the topic of Gas Station Drugs.  Law Enforcement Sector Representative, Officer David Holloway has provided numerous presentations on the subject at the local and state levels.  The Coalition works diligently to stay apprised of items readily available in our gas stations that are misused causing health, addiction and behavior issues.  The landscape changes quickly and regular environmental scans must be conducted to stay abreast of the latest products. Chief’s Challenge

The Chief’s Challenge was held for 6 years as part of the Impact Montevallo Coalition’s celebration of  Red Ribbon Week.  A National celebration of living a healthy drug-free lifestyle.  The Chief’s Challenge brought together our local first responders, Police and Fire Departments, to compete with local high school students in physical challenges.  The challenges were based on the requirements first responders face for certification.  The event brought the community and youth together in a fun way to celebrate the physical benefits of living a healthy drug-free lifestyle.  Youth gained valuable positive fun interactions with first responders, inspiring mentors and resources for youth. The community came out to cheer on our teams. Teams would win cash prizes to support their organizations.

The Impact Montevallo purchased the Fatal Vision resources to provide the community with an interactive educational experience.  The Coalition currently has two pedal karts, six fatal vision goggles and multiple interactive games and activities.  The goggles vary based on the BAC, blood alcohol concentration, providing a unique visual experience for the community of the impairments using alcohol causes for everyday tasks and perceptions.  The Coalition also has goggles featuring alcohol and marijuana combinations.  The community is usually surprised to see that they struggle with normal tasks with the goggles on.  The use of these resources provide an opportunity for education and prevention.  Users must be at least 12 years old.  Youth consistently comment that they will not use alcohol following an event featuring these resources.

Going Green for Mental Health

In March of each year, the Impact Montevallo Coalition hosts the Going Green for Mental Health campaign.  This campaign was created by Coalition members in a monthly meeting after reviewing data received as part of the PRIDE Survey taken by our students.  Coalition members were concerned about the number of youth reporting mental health issues. As part of this week, the Coalition encourages the community to wear green to spark conversations about mental health, hosts scavenger hunts to encourage physical activity, lunch-time discussions with youth at local schools, and a variety of other activities to engage youth. Resources are provided each year on the #988 crisis and suicide hotline.  It is the coalition’s goal to bring awareness of mental health to end the stigma and make resources available and known.

Family-Friendly Entertainment

The Montevallo community is a small rural community.  Many times, we hear from our youth, that there are not enough entertainment opportunities.  The Impact Montevallo Coalition strives to provide our community with family-friendly activities that will encourage families to spend time together, explore new hobbies, meet new people and learn more about their community.

Youth Street-Pole Banner Series

In an effort to showcase our talented youth and the positive activities they pursue, the Impact Montevallo Coalition partnered with Montevallo Main Street, the City of Montevallo and the Montevallo Legacy Project for youth to create local art that is displayed on the street poles in our beautiful downtown.  The project gave youth an opportunity to engage with the community and see their vision come to life.  The project has been conducted twice to date.  The first featured art that showcased the love of their community or good choices.  The banners featured the coalition’s tagline, “Decisions Today. Impact Tomorrow.”  Youth are proud to see their art displayed throughout downtown and bring family  to view it.  The second project featured the Black History of our community. These projects reiterate the value our youth have in our community and encourages youth to continue to pursue a positive drug-free path to success.

Camp Journey

Each summer, the Impact Montevallo Coalition hosts a week-long camp for incoming 6th grade students.

City and State Prevention Advocacy

The Impact Montevallo Coalition members participate in providing information on current legislation to city and state leaders to ensure that our youth have the best opportunity to live quality drug-free lives.

Youth & Community Education

Prevention starts with education.  The Impact Montevallo Coalition works to educate our community, from elementary students to elders on the dangers associated with the use of substances.

SPOT Trailer

The SPOT, Substance Prevention Observation Training, Trailer is a tool created by the Impact Montevallo Coalition as a interactive visual training experience for educators, parents, organizations and citizens.
