24 Aug Red Ribbon Week
Red Ribbon Week is a national campaign to celebrate youth choosing to be drug-free. The week is held October 23rd – 31st each year. Impact Montevallo works with the local schools to promote choosing a drug-free lifestyle by providing various opportunities for education and fun. We provide schools with facts that are shared in daily annoucements, we host a art contest each year, we work with our peer helper groups and our School Resource Officers to provide education and training to students, parents and educators. We also host our annual Chief’s Challenge, which is a partnership between Impact and local first responders. Originally inspired by our Chief of Police, the event brings first responders and youth together to celebrate the physical benefits of choosing a healthy drug-free lifestyle. Youth compete along side police and fire personnel in meeting physical standards required by thier position. There is a little fun added in such as turning the the 1.5 mile run into a color run, tug-a-war, and great prizes. The event brings the community out to cheer and celebrate being drug-free. The event is held on the Tuesday of Red Ribbon Week each year. At the home high school football game that week, we celebrate with annoucements from the stands, pass out usable sigange to attendees with drug facts such as fans or paper megaphones. We also work with our local Junior City Council to host a free movie night at the end of the week in conjunction with Halloween. The City Council supports us with a proclamation to declare the week as a city-wide celebration of living drug-free making the week a true community effort.
